This chicken bacon Swiss sandwich recipe combines juicy, boldly flavored chicken breast with smoky, crumbled bacon and a delicious honey mustard sauce to create the perfect bite.

Eating a delicious sandwich while sitting outdoors is one of life’s simple joys. While there are many chicken sandwich recipes to choose from, you can’t go wrong with the classic flavors found in this chicken bacon Swiss sandwich. Juicy, perfectly seasoned chicken is wrapped in a blanket of melted Swiss cheese, and crispy bacon is crumbled over top for the ultimate texture bomb. Add a well-balanced honey mustard sauce to the mix, and you’re set for the perfect bite every time you dive in.

We serve these chicken sandwiches on hamburger buns, but you could certainly go a different direction. Use subtly tangy sourdough for an artisanal approach or pretzel buns for a satisfyingly chewy texture. You can even turn this chicken bacon and Swiss sandwich into a wrap using tortillas, or go the gluten-free route and make lettuce wraps.

If you’re preparing this recipe for a gathering, don’t feel like you have to make one sandwich per person. Cut the sandwiches into smaller pieces and serve them alongside filling potluck side dishes or easy summer appetizers. It doesn’t take much effort to please a hungry crowd, and this sandwich recipe is testament to that.

Chicken Bacon Swiss Sandwich Ingredients

  • Mayonnaise
  • Dijon mustard
  • Honey
  • Chicken breasts
  • Montreal steak seasoning
  • Swiss cheese
  • Hamburger buns
  • Bacon strips
  • Lettuce leaves and tomato slices (optional)

Directions

Step 1: Make the sauce

In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard and honey.

Step 2: Cook the chicken

Pound the chicken with a meat mallet to 1/2-inch thickness, and sprinkle it with steak seasoning. Grill the chicken, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 inches from the heat until a thermometer reads 165°F. It should take four to six minutes on each side. Top it with cheese during the last minute of cooking.

Step 3: Assemble the sandwich

Grill the buns over medium heat, cut side down, until toasted, 30 to 60 seconds. Serve the chicken on the buns with bacon, mayonnaise mixture and, if desired, lettuce and tomato.

Editor’s Tip: Toasting your buns is an important step that adds a nice, buttery crunch to the dish and prevents the sandwich from becoming soggy.

How to Store Chicken Bacon Swiss Sandwiches

Store the cooked chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days. If you’re making the chicken ahead of time, we suggest only melting the cheese on the chicken that will be eaten immediately. Melt the rest when you reheat the chicken, and grill the buns just before serving.

Chicken Bacon Swiss Sandwich Tips

What can I serve with a chicken and bacon sandwich?

This chicken bacon and Swiss sandwich is filling enough to be enjoyed on its own, but it also tastes fantastic paired with make-ahead side dishes like roasted vegetables or dill potato salad. To turn it into a soup-and-sandwich combo, take the classic route and pair it with tomato soup, or serve the sandwiches with refreshing summer salads for a lighter take.

Can I bake chicken breasts for sandwiches instead of grilling them?

You can certainly bake your chicken instead of grilling it when making sandwiches. Preheat your oven to 375° while you season the chicken. Cook it until the internal temperature reaches 165°, and let it rest for a few minutes to allow the juices to redistribute. Alternatively, when the chicken is nearing the proper internal temperature, increase the oven heat and broil the chicken to develop a nice, crisp crust.

Can I use a different cheese for my chicken and bacon sandwich?

Swiss cheese adds a nutty flavor to chicken and bacon sandwiches, but feel free to substitute other types of cheese that you enjoy. Mozzarella will add a mild, creamy taste with a subtle tang, while pepper jack will introduce a nice kick of spice to the sandwich. You can even add sharp cheddar for a stronger taste that would pair well with the other flavors in this chicken bacon sandwich.
