This Popular Deli Item Has Been Recalled for Possible Listeria Contamination

Before you head to that picnic or potluck, make sure you check what you’re bringing. Reser’s recently recalled its ready-to-eat ham salad from grocery stores nationwide. The salads could be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. Here’s everything we know so far.
What caused the recall?
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Reser’s Fine Foods recalled its ready-to-eat ham salad products. One of the ingredients in the ham salads are bread crumbs. These bread crumbs were previously recalled by Newly Weds Foods due to the possibility of contamination with listeria monocytogenes.
If ingested, listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis. Two types of illness can stem from listeria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): invasive illness, which is when the listeria has spread beyond the intestines, or intestinal illness, which is when the listeria remains in the gastrointestinal system.
Symptoms for the intestinal illness, which can include diarrhea or vomiting, typically start within one to three days of eating contaminated food.
Invasive listeriosis symptoms often don’t start until after two weeks of eating contaminated food. These symptoms include:
- Fever
- Muscle aches, headaches or fatigue
- Stiff neck
- Confusion
- Loss of balance
- Seizures
If you experience any of these symptoms after eating a recalled item, please consult your doctor immediately.
What stores sold the ham salads?
The specific stores have not been identified, but this is a nationwide recall. So, if you purchase Reser’s ready-to-eat salads at your grocery store, make sure to check and see if you have any of the recalled variety.
