Some things are just made to go together: rich and creamy, cozy and comforting, ham and cheese … and noodles. One bite of this ham and noodle recipe and you’ll be enthusiastically nodding in agreement. Tender egg noodles topped with diced ham in a savory cream sauce are so satisfying and delicious, you won’t believe how quick and easy it is to make. On the table in less than 30 minutes from start to finish, it’s the perfect solution for leftover holiday ham—and might even have you packing up the extras from grandma’s brunch table.

Ham and Noodle Ingredients

  • Wide egg noodles
  • Butter
  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Cooked ham
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Green onions
  • Salt and pepper

Directions

Step 1: Cook the noodles

Cook the noodles according to the package directions.

Step 2: Prepare the sauce

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Gradually whisk in the cream and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce the heat to a simmer, and continue to cook and stir until thickened, about two minutes longer.

Step 3: Combine everything, heat and toss

Add the ham, cheese, onions, salt and pepper to the sauce. Cook, uncovered, until heated through. Drain the noodles in a colander and combine them with the sauce mixture. Toss to coat, and then heat through again.

How to Store Ham and Noodles

Should you find yourself with any leftovers, they can be stored in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to four days. Ham and noodles can be reheated in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated through. Due to the cream sauce, we don’t recommend freezing, as the dairy tends to separate when thawed.

The cream sauce may continue to thicken as it cools in the fridge. Add a little water before reheating in order to bring it back to its original texture.

Ham and Noodle Tips

What vegetable can I add to ham and noodles?

To add some vegetable nutrients, as well as a pop of color, toss frozen peas or green beans into the sauce while it simmers. Other options that work well in this recipe are sautéed mushrooms, carrots and broccoli.

Do I need leftover ham to make ham noodles?

Absolutely not. This ham and noodles recipe doesn’t need to be relegated to the “leftovers only” category. Ham and noodles are great with any precooked, packaged ham you can buy at the store—in fact, you can even find it pre-diced. Whether you searched the aisles for the perfect ham, or simply had it sliced at the deli counter, you won’t go wrong with any variety you choose.

Can I make ham and noodles gluten-free?

You sure can. The only source of gluten in this recipe is the egg noodles. To eliminate wheat and gluten from this dish, swap them out for a gluten-free variety. For an even healthier version, try serving it over zoodles (aka zucchini noodles).

This rich-tasting dish is ready to serve in almost the time it takes to cook the noodles. I've made it for luncheons and potlucks, but mostly I make it on days when I'm in a hurry to get something on the table. —Lucille Howell, Portland, Oregon
